One of the main benefits of building a site on a Content Management System (CMS) like WordPress is that the CMS allows you to manage your site’s content – edit posts and pages, add images, create new pages, delete content, etc. – without any coding skills. This makes managing a site way easier, even for those of us with a background in development. Still, there are benefits to having someone on hand to manage and update your site. Here are some reasons why you may need a Website Manager (AKA: a Webmaster)…
1. A Webmaster Can Make Your Site Secure
Managing a website involves more than just adding and editing content. You also have to make sure you’re running the current version of WordPress; that your plugins are up-to-date; that you are performing regular backups; and more. Failing to perform these tasks leaves your site open to hackers and other attacks – a major potential headache! A Webmaster will take care of all of this and advise on additional security measures that you might not be aware that you need.
2. A Webmaster Can Make Your Site Work Harder for You
A lot of WordPress plugins and themes are perfectly serviceable right out of the box, but employing a Webmaster – someone with coding knowledge – can help take your site even further. Sometimes, plugins take time to set up. Other times, they need to be customized to work with your site’s design or to work as you need them to. Having someone available to do this customization work means that you can do more with your site and make it a better tool for your organization or business.
3. Protect Your Time
A lot of the tasks that go into managing a website are time-consuming, even for people with a lot of coding knowledge. And, just because you can do something, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you should. You have a business to run, connections to make, and other important things to do to actually grow your organization and move ahead. All of that is put aside if you’re spending time futzing around with your website. Just as you would hire an accountant to manage your finances or an administrative assistant to manage your calendar and correspondence, consider hiring a professional Webmaster to manage your site.
4. Sometimes, Things Go Wrong
Even the best website can sometimes experiences errors or issues. Having a Webmaster available who is able to diagnose the problem and fix it could save you hours of guesswork or time on the phone with your webhost tech support.
Where Can I Find a Webmaster?
There are a number of ways to find and hire a good Webmaster. Sometimes, web development companies will offer ongoing support packages. There are also many individuals available (including yours truly!) that can be hired on a freelance basis. And, if your company or organization is large enough, it might be worth it to hire someone fulltime.
In the future, I will put together a list of questions to ask when interviewing a potential Webmaster, so look out for that!
